City water departments

  • City of Fresno Water Conservation Program: (559) 621-5480, waterconservation@fresno.gov. Rebates, consultations, and the outdoor watering schedule. Watering is never allowed between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. or on Mondays. You can also reach the City at 311 or (559) 621-2489.
  • City of Clovis Public Utilities: (559) 324-2600. Watering schedule, free landscape audits, and help setting sprinkler timers (City page). Clovis bans outdoor irrigation during and within 48 hours of measurable rain.

Before you dig

Contact USA North 811 (dial 811 or file online) at least two working days before digging, not counting the day you file. It’s free, and in California it’s the law. Mark the dig area in white first. Utilities won’t mark private lines like your sprinkler pipe, which is purple in the utility color code for reclaimed water and irrigation.

Weather and watering data

CIMIS is California’s irrigation weather-station network. Smart controllers and irrigation pros use its evapotranspiration (ET) data to set how much water plants need. For WaterSense-labeled controllers, see EPA WaterSense.

Plants and garden help

  • Fresno Gardening: the City of Fresno’s plant lists, design templates, and DIY resources for water-wise gardens.
  • Clovis Botanical Garden: recommended by the City of Clovis for information on native plants.

Farms and canals

The Fresno Irrigation District delivers surface water to agricultural, municipal, and other customers in its district. It is not your home water utility. For your house, call your city.

Safety first: if you can’t stop the water, close the shutoff valve for the irrigation system, or the main shutoff to the house. Before you dig anywhere, call 811 to have buried utility lines marked.
