One sprinkler zone won’t turn on in Caruthers?
When one sprinkler zone stops working and the rest of the system is fine, the problem is usually not the heads. It is the signal that tells the valve to open: the low-voltage wire from the controller, a splice in a valve box, or the solenoid on top of the valve.
We find which one it is, repair it, and run the zone from the controller before we leave.
Caruthers Community Services District runs the community water system, and the State Water Board lists its source as groundwater. Whatever the rules, a zone that never turns on leaves part of the yard dry, and in Caruthers’s summer heat that shows quickly.
What breaks sprinkler wire
- Digging. Shovels, aerators, fence posts, new trees and trenching for other work.
- Old splices. Wire twisted together and taped in a wet valve box corrodes until the signal stops.
- Rodents. Gophers and other burrowing animals chew through buried cable.
- A bad common wire. One shared wire serves every valve, so a fault there can take out several zones at once.
- Failed solenoids. Heat and age wear out the coil, and the zone stops opening.
Step by step: finding the fault
We start at the controller, because a missing start time or a disabled station looks exactly like a broken wire. Then we test the station’s circuit with a meter: an open reading points to a cut or corroded wire, and a reading that is too low points to a shorted solenoid or damaged insulation.
Next we open the valve by hand. If water flows, the valve is good and the fault is electrical. A wire tracer follows the cable through the ground to the break, we dig only there, splice it with waterproof connectors made for direct burial, and run every zone from the controller.

When a splice is enough, and when it isn’t
One cut, one splice: that is the usual job. But when wire is decades old, cracks when it is bent, or has been patched several times, another splice just moves the problem. In that case we explain what running new wire to those valves would involve, and you decide before we start.
About Caruthers
Caruthers shares the Fresno area’s semi-arid San Joaquin Valley climate, with long, hot, dry summers, mild winters and about 11 inches of rain a year, so sprinklers carry most of the watering load.
A Fresno County Library branch opened in Caruthers in 1911, and its current building, opened in 2003, is designed to look like a tank house and barn.
Caruthers had 2,613 residents at the 2020 census and sits at about 246 feet above sea level. A census-designated place (not a city).
The 2020 census counted 719 housing units in Caruthers, and about 60.7% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. That works out to about 355 housing units per square mile.
Every brand, same diagnosis
Wire and solenoid faults happen on every brand. We trace and repair them on Rain Bird, Hunter, Orbit/B-hyve, Irritrol/Lawn Genie and Toro systems.
