First: shut off the water

  1. Turn the controller to Off. If the water stops, a zone was running and the break is on that zone’s line or a head. It only leaks while the zone runs, so leave the controller off until it is fixed.
  2. Still running? Close the sprinkler shutoff. Water that keeps flowing with the controller off means a valve is stuck open or the main line is broken. Many homes have a separate shutoff on the line that feeds the valves.
  3. No sprinkler shutoff? Close the main water shutoff to the house.
  4. On a private well? Switch the pump off at its breaker.
  5. Then call us. Tell us your address and what you see.

Two kinds of break

There are two pipes in every sprinkler system. Before the valves is the main line, which always holds full pressure. After the valves are the zone lines, which only fill when a zone runs.

A geyser that stops when you switch the timer off came from a zone line or a head. Water that keeps coming no matter what the timer says is the main line or a valve that is stuck open, and it will not stop on its own.

Zone stuck on?

When a zone won’t stop, the valve is the usual culprit: grit under the diaphragm, a tear in it, or a solenoid that won’t seat. Some valves have a flow-control handle on top; turning it fully clockwise can shut the zone. If not, close the sprinkler shutoff and leave it closed until the valve is repaired.

Our valve won’t shut off guide walks through it.

What the repair involves

On site we locate the leak, open a small hole right at it, replace the broken pipe or fitting, and pressure-test before we backfill. A valve that sticks gets cleaned, rebuilt or replaced. Every zone runs before we leave. See sprinkler pipe repair in Fowler and valve repair in Fowler.

How do I turn off my sprinkler water?

Turn the controller to Off first. If water still runs, close the shutoff for the sprinkler system, or the main shutoff for the house. On a private well, switch the pump off at its breaker.

Is a broken sprinkler pipe an emergency?

A main-line break or a valve that won’t close runs around the clock, so shut off the water right away. A broken head or zone line only leaks while that zone runs, so turning the controller off stops it.

Who fixes a leak before the water meter?

Leaks on the provider’s side of the meter are usually the water provider’s to fix, so call them. Leaks after the meter, including sprinkler lines, are the owner’s, and we repair those.
