First: shut off the water
Work from the controller back toward the water supply, and stop as soon as the water does:
- The timer. Switch it to Off. A broken head or zone line goes quiet right away.
- The sprinkler shutoff. If water is still coming, close the valve that feeds the sprinkler system. That stops a stuck zone valve or a main-line break.
- The house main. No separate sprinkler shutoff? Close the main for the house.
- The well pump. On a private well, turn the pump off at its breaker.
Then call or text us with your address.
In Malaga: why it can’t wait
Water in Malaga is provided by the Malaga County Water District, a five-member board-governed district with an office at 3580 S. Frank Street, Fresno. The District’s phone number is (559) 485-7353. If water is coming up on the district’s side of your meter, call the district. Leaks on your side, including sprinkler lines, are yours to fix, and we can do that.
Then call us
Call or text (559) 203-7881. Tell us your address, what is broken and whether the water is off. We’ll get you on the schedule as fast as we can. Our Fresno location is open Sunday through Thursday 5 AM–9 PM and Friday 5 AM–6 PM, and closed Saturday. We serve Malaga from there, about 8.0 miles away.
If you reach voicemail, leave your address and what is happening, and we will call you back as soon as we can. Once the water is off, a broken line can usually wait for a scheduled repair without more damage.
Main line or zone line? Why it matters
Your sprinkler main line runs from the water supply to the valves and is under pressure all the time. When it breaks, water runs nonstop until someone shuts it off. The zone lines after each valve only hold water while that zone runs, so a break there floods only during its cycle.
That is why the first step is the controller. If turning it off stops the water, the break is on a zone line. If it doesn’t, it is the main line or a valve stuck open.
A valve that won’t shut off
A zone that keeps running after the controller is off usually has debris in the valve, a torn diaphragm, or a solenoid stuck open. If your valve has a flow-control handle on top, turning it all the way clockwise can close it until we get there. Otherwise, close the sprinkler shutoff.
See our guide on a sprinkler valve that won’t shut off for more.
About Malaga
Malaga shares the Fresno area’s semi-arid San Joaquin Valley climate, with long, hot, dry summers, mild winters and about 11 inches of rain a year, so sprinklers carry most of the watering load.
Malaga had 884 residents at the 2020 census and sits at about 295 feet above sea level. A census-designated place (not a city).
The Malaga County Water District covers about 2.25 square miles along State Highway 99 and provides water, wastewater, community recreation and residential solid-waste services.
What happens next
We find the break, dig only where it is, cut out the damaged section and repair it with proper fittings. For a stuck valve we clean or rebuild it, or replace it if it is worn out. Then we run every zone and check for other leaks. See sprinkler pipe repair in Malaga and valve repair in Malaga.
