One sprinkler zone won’t turn on in Fresno?
When one sprinkler zone stops working and the rest of the system is fine, the problem is usually not the heads. It is the signal that tells the valve to open: the low-voltage wire from the controller, a splice in a valve box, or the solenoid on top of the valve.
We find which one it is, repair it, and run the zone from the controller before we leave.
Fresno bans watering from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., so most systems run overnight or before sunrise. A zone that stops working can go unnoticed for days, until the grass on that zone starts to brown.
Fresno watering rules and a dead zone
Fresno’s City water customers follow the City of Fresno’s schedule. If your water comes from a different provider or a private well, follow that provider’s rules.
From April 1 to October 31, odd-numbered addresses water Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and even-numbered addresses Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. From November 1 to March 31, odd addresses water Saturday only and even addresses Sunday only. No watering on Mondays, and never between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

What breaks sprinkler wire
- Digging. Shovels, aerators, fence posts, new trees and trenching for other work.
- Old splices. Wire twisted together and taped in a wet valve box corrodes until the signal stops.
- Rodents. Gophers and other burrowing animals chew through buried cable.
- A bad common wire. One shared wire serves every valve, so a fault there can take out several zones at once.
- Failed solenoids. Heat and age wear out the coil, and the zone stops opening.
How we trace a dead zone
- Controller first. We check the program and the station output, so we are not chasing a setting.
- Test the circuit. A meter reading at the controller tells us whether the wire is broken, shorted or fine.
- Run the valve by hand. If the zone runs when we open the valve manually, the valve works and the problem is electrical.
- Locate the fault. A wire tracer follows the cable underground to the break, so we dig in one spot, not across the yard.
- Repair and re-test. Waterproof direct-burial splices, a new solenoid if it failed, and every zone run from the controller.
Brands we repair in Fresno
Wire and solenoid faults happen on every brand. We trace and repair them on Rain Bird, Hunter, Orbit/B-hyve, Irritrol/Lawn Genie and Toro systems.
Repair or run new wire?
Most faults are one break or one bad splice, and a proper repair fixes them for good. If the old wire is brittle, splices keep failing, or the cable was never buried deep enough, running new wire to the affected zones can make more sense. We tell you what each option involves before any work starts.
About Fresno
Fresno summers are hard on sprinkler parts. At the Fresno Yosemite International Airport station the average July high is 97.7°F and the area averages about 38 days a year at 100°F or hotter, according to NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals. Seals, solenoids and plastic risers wear faster in that heat.
Fresno had 542,107 residents at the 2020 census and sits at about 308 feet above sea level. Incorporated on October 21, 1885.
The Tower Theatre, built in 1939 at Olive and Wishon Avenues, anchors the Tower District north of downtown.
