About Tower District
The Tower District is just north of downtown Fresno and about half a mile south of Fresno City College. Its center is the Tower Theatre, built in 1939 at Olive and Wishon Avenues and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Its streets hold many early-1900s Craftsman bungalows; the Adoline-Palm area has one of the largest groups of 1910s and 1920s bungalows still standing. The City of Fresno is updating the Tower District Specific Plan. The neighborhood is in ZIP 93728, with the north edge in 93704.
ZIP: 93728 and 93704 · Distance: about 2.0 miles from ACRE Fresno, 911 E Lansing Way.
Older homes, added-on systems
Homes here were built long before automatic sprinklers were common, so most systems were added later, sometimes more than once. It is common to find several generations of parts in one yard: an old valve next to a newer one, mixed head brands on the same zone, or a line that was patched instead of replaced.
Lots are smaller and many front yards include a parkway strip between the sidewalk and the street. Narrow strips are hard to water with spray heads without hitting pavement, which is why many owners convert them to drip or low-water planting.
Parkway strips and drip conversions
Spray heads in a narrow strip throw water onto the sidewalk and street, and the City’s rules prohibit runoff. Converting the strip and front beds to drip irrigation puts the water at the roots. If you keep lawn, matched low-angle nozzles and shorter cycles help. We can also tidy up mixed old parts so each zone has one head type.
