Sprinkler zone not working in Sanger?
When one sprinkler zone stops working and the rest of the system is fine, the problem is usually not the heads. It is the signal that tells the valve to open: the low-voltage wire from the controller, a splice in a valve box, or the solenoid on top of the valve.
We find which one it is, repair it, and run the zone from the controller before we leave.
In Sanger the watering rules in short are: Monday/Thursday east of Academy Ave; Wednesday/Sunday (even) or Tuesday/Saturday (odd) elsewhere; never Friday. With the timer running on a tight schedule, a zone that stops responding may not be noticed until the lawn on it browns.
How we trace a dead zone
- Controller first. We check the program and the station output, so we are not chasing a setting.
- Test the circuit. A meter reading at the controller tells us whether the wire is broken, shorted or fine.
- Run the valve by hand. If the zone runs when we open the valve manually, the valve works and the problem is electrical.
- Locate the fault. A wire tracer follows the cable underground to the break, so we dig in one spot, not across the yard.
- Repair and re-test. Waterproof direct-burial splices, a new solenoid if it failed, and every zone run from the controller.
The usual suspects
A cut. Most breaks happen where somebody dug: a new fence, a tree, an edging job or a utility trench. A bad splice. Wire joined with tape or a plain wire nut in a valve box fills with water and corrodes. A chewed cable. Gophers don’t care what they bite. A tired solenoid. The coil fails with age and summer heat.
If two or more zones died at once, the shared common wire is the first thing we test.
Living with sprinklers in Sanger
Sanger shares the Fresno area’s semi-arid San Joaquin Valley climate, with long, hot, dry summers, mild winters and about 11 inches of rain a year, so sprinklers carry most of the watering load.
The 2020 census counted 7,787 housing units in Sanger, and about 58.6% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. That works out to about 1,350 housing units per square mile.
Sanger is named for Joseph Sanger Jr., an official of the Pacific Improvement Company, an affiliate of the Southern Pacific Railroad.
In 1949 the U.S. Postal Service designated Sanger the “Nation’s Christmas Tree City.”
Fix it once
A sealed splice in the right place usually ends the problem. Where the cable is old and brittle, has been patched over and over, or sits too shallow, we will show you why new wire to those zones may be the better fix, and what that involves, before anything is dug.
Sanger watering rules and a dead zone
The City of Sanger pumps all of its drinking water from wells located throughout the city, according to the City’s watering-schedule page.
Addresses east of Academy Avenue water Monday and Thursday. All other even-numbered addresses water Wednesday and Sunday, and odd-numbered addresses Tuesday and Saturday. There is no watering on Fridays, city-wide, and watering is allowed only 3–7 a.m. and 7 p.m.–midnight.
